The Scratcher

In stock

Tired of shredded curtains, clawed carpets, and that sinking feeling when you hear your cat go at the furniture? The Scratcher is a 54cm horizontal wooden post wrapped in carpet that gives your cat what they actually need –a proper scratch outlet that saves your furniture.

Scratching is a natural, essential behaviour cats need to maintain healthy claws, stretch their muscles, and mark their territory. Without the right outlet, your sofa becomes the target. The Scratcher’s solid wood base means no wobbling or tipping when they really go at it, and the carpet texture? Most cats naturally prefer it over sisal or cardboard.

This isn’t a complicated cat tree or a flimsy toy. It’s a simple, effective scratch solution that protects your furniture while it keeps your cat happy and healthy. It’s exercise, stress relief, and claw maintenance all in one natural behaviour.

Ideal for: Indoor cats, multi-cat households, rescue cats settling in, cats who ignore vertical scratchers, apartment living, protecting new furniture

How to use The Scratcher

Place The Scratcher near where your cat already tries to scratch – by the couch, near a window, or in a high-traffic area where they like to stretch after naps. Cats often scratch when they’re excited or just waking up, so location matters.

Want to make it irresistible? Sprinkle a bit of Happy Nip or Mellow Meow on the carpet section. The scent draws them in and creates a positive association. You can also gently guide their paws down the post in a scratching motion to show them what it’s for.

FAQs

1. Why do cats need to scratch?
Scratching is a completely normal and necessary behaviour for cats. It's not optional—it's instinct. Cats scratch to condition their claws (removing dead outer layers), stretch their entire body (especially after sleep), mark territory through scent glands in their paws, and relieve stress. Without a proper outlet, they'll find one—usually your furniture.
2. Why horizontal instead of vertical scratchers?
Different cats prefer different angles, but most enjoy vertical scratchers because they allow for a full-body stretch. Cats naturally scratch vertical surfaces like trees in the wild, and The Scratcher mimics this. If your cat already claws the back of your couch or door frames, they're showing you they prefer vertical surfaces. Different cats prefer different angles. Some cats naturally prefer horizontal scratching surfaces, especially if they already scratch carpets or rugs. Horizontal scratchers are also ideal for senior cats or those with joint issues who find it uncomfortable to reach up. If your cat loves to stretch out on the floor and knead, they'll likely love a horizontal scratcher.
3. What if I have multiple cats?
The Scratcher works great in multi-cat households. You might want to place more than one around your home so each cat has access without competition. Cats sometimes guard resources, so having multiple scratch options reduces stress and territorial behaviour.
4. Why carpet instead of sisal or cardboard?
Many cats naturally prefer carpet texture because it feels satisfying under their claws and provides good resistance. If your cat already scratches your carpets or rugs, they're telling you they like that texture. Sisal and cardboard are other options, but carpet tends to be a crowd-pleaser. We also sell The Scratch Box for cats who prefer cardboard.
5. Is one scratcher enough?
It depends on your home size and the number of cats. A single cat in a small flat might be fine with one, but larger homes or multi-cat households benefit from multiple scratchers in different rooms. Cats often scratch in areas where they spend the most time, so strategic placement matters more than quantity.
6. What if my cat still scratches the furniture?
First, make sure The Scratcher is in the right location. Cats are particular about where they scratch. Try moving it closer to where they already scratch, or place it near their favourite nap spot. Add Happy Nip or Mellow Meow to draw them to it. You can also gently redirect them to The Scratcher when you catch them on furniture, then reward them when they use it correctly.
