The Rover | Leather lead for dogs

In stock

Good dogs deserve good gear.

Made from sturdy, veg-tan leather, our 1.2m dog lead is designed for daily walks, weekend sniffaris and those surprise zoomies at the park. It’s strong, smooth in the hand, and gets softer with every walk, just like your dog’s heart (unless they see a squirrel).

Unlike nylon leads, leather won’t fray, snap, or soak up smells. It’s the kind of gear that lasts for years and only gets better with age. The timeless design doesn’t scream dog mum, but it does whisper well-trained human.

Important note: Yes, our leads are strong and handcrafted, but no lead is indestructible. You know your dog better than we do. If your dog pulls like they’re training for a sled race, lunges at passing wildlife, or has a history of breaking leads, please use your judgment when choosing gear. Fur Family isn’t liable for any damage or injury caused by breakage of this product. Always check for signs of wear and replace when needed. Safety first, always.

Ideal for: Daily walks, beach trips, city pavements, hiking, training, dogs with good-to-moderate lead manners

FAQs

1. Does the leather lead come in different colours or sizes?
Right now, it comes in one size and one beautiful natural leather tone. But if your dog’s a bit of a style icon, get in touch, as we're always open to custom orders.
2. What kind of leather do you use?
We use genuine veg tan leather (sourced from Woodheads, Cape Town) that’s smooth in the hand and built to last. With use, it softens and ages beautifully – kind of like your dog, but less muddy.
3. WIll this lead be strong enough for my dog?
We've designed it with strength in mind and tested it with our own dogs, but no lead is truly indestructible. If your dog pulls hard, has broken leads before, or reacts strongly to distractions, please use your best judgement. Whatever lead you choose, inspect it regularly for wear and replace it when needed. Safety comes first.
4. How long is the lead?
1.2 metres. We've found this length gives dogs enough freedom to sniff and explore while keeping you in control. It's ideal for urban walks, parks, and training.
5. Will it absorb smells like nylon leads?
Nope. One of the joys of leather is that it doesn’t soak up smells like nylon does. That means your lead won’t hang onto Eau de Wet Dog after a rainy walk.
6. How do I know when to replace my leather lead?
Check it regularly for signs of wear - thinning leather, cracks, or hardware issues. If you spot any of these, it's time for a replacement. Leather is durable, but it's not invincible, especially if your dog pulls consistently.
7. Can I use this lead in the rain?
Yes, but leather isn't waterproof. It'll handle light rain and damp conditions, but it's best to let it dry naturally after getting wet. Regular conditioning will help maintain its water resistance and prevent cracking.
